All About FOBAB 10/31/17
About the Fest
For the last 15 years FOBAB, or Festival or Barrel Aged Beers has been the place where Barrel Aged Beer makers and enthusiasts can come together to share beers sometimes for the first and last time. The weekend long event allows for tastings and an award ceremony to celebrate some of the most complex and beautifully crafted beers around.
In anticipation of this year’s fest here is a roundup of some of our favorite barrel aged beers, we will have these in the Shoppe or on Tap!
Bourbon County Stout is the obvious place to start when talking about barrel aged beers. Every year Goose Island releases their Bourbon County Stout on Black Friday and people line up around the block, not only because it’s better than being trampled to death for a tickle me elmo, but because the beer is really, really good. This year they will release their Bourbon County Stout, their Bourbon County Stout with Coffee and their Bourbon County Stout Barley Wine. On top of these three there will be four more variants. The Proprietors Blend is brewed with Banana’s Foster in mind and will only be available in Chicago. The Northwoods Stout is brewed with Blueberry Juice and Vanilla. And the Reserve Brand Stout was was aged in 11 year old Knob Creek Barrels and is worth holding on to for a year or two. All in all each one is more decadently delicious than the last!
Surly Barrel Aged Darkness is one of those beers that manages to be both boozy and balanced. With vanilla, anise, hints of oak and chocolate fudge, Surly’s Barrel Aged Darkness has a little bit of every flavor and it all blends together to create a rich, dark and beautiful stout.
Madagascar is an imperial milk stout by Four Hands Brewing that gets its name from the madagascar vanilla that adds a light sweetness to an otherwise creamy rich stout.
Far North Declaration is made by Lo Rez, out of Pilsen, in collaboration with Minnesota based distillery Far North Spirits. The result is a spice-y barrel aged imperial stout that still has that rich vanilla smoothness throughout.
Abraxas by Perennial is a new take on a mexican hot chocolate. With vanilla, cocoa nibs and ancho chillies its rich and spicy. It makes a great dessert or is fun to pair with something bold like a juicy hamburger.
When it comes to Barrel Aged Beers this is just a little glimpse of all the good stuff coming our way!
